the fire

well, today was pretty normal until about 5:00 p.m.

spencer and i were in the backyard playing soccer when we heard our 12 year old neighbor yelling, "help! help!" from his backyard.  i looked through the fence and noticed that a small patch of his yard was on fire!

spencer and i ran in the house yelling at daryl to do something.  at first he didn't understand what spencer was telling him.  i guess my yelling in a little more stern fashion got through to him. before i knew daryl was out the door, and spencer was shoving a phone in my face telling me to talk to 911.

by this time our neighbor's yard was completely consumed by fire, the little boy was in his front yard frantic about what was happening, and i was trying to explain to the dispatcher what was going on!

the fire quickly  spread around their house into our yard, 2 other neighbors' backyards and back into their front yard.  daryl grabbed our water hose and was going after the fire. spencer had gone into our house and grabbed a pitcher of water, so i did my part and poured it on the fire {which did no good.}.

it seemed like an eternity before the fire department arrived.  i was waiting out front with the little boy trying to comfort him.  he was alone and he was the one who accidentally started the fire.  he was terrified.  he just kept apologizing to me and crying.

by the time all the firemen unloaded, daryl had put the fire out!  what a man!  i really don't know how he did it with just a water hose and such strong winds today.  god was definitely looking out for all of us.  none of the houses were burned...not even a wooden fence!  it's amazing!  for a fire that burned 4 yards, i'm really surprised there wasn't any more damage.

so my pic of the day goes to daryl, the hero. the fireman.

pic of the day #37
they call me the fireman

(this is/was the yard on the other side of our neighbor's house.  daryl is in the backyard 2 houses down from us!  behind that nice new fence is a completely burned yard!)

thank goodness this is all that happened to our yard:
quote of the day: "The hero is commonly the simplest and obscurest of men."  ~Henry David Thoreau
